Istanbul Celebrates Intercultural Weeks on International Migration

Turkey - As part of the “2nd Intercultural Weeks on International Migration in Istanbul,” 2nd -17th November 2012, IOM is organizing an exhibition “Art of Migration” featuring works by 59 migrant artists.
The exhibition, which is supported by Anadolu Kültür, will run from November 2nd to 15th in the Cezayir exhibition hall in Istanbul’s Galatasaray district. A second, parallel exhibition will run from November 5th to 15th at the Dimitrie Cantemir Romanian Cultural Center in Taksim.
Works from the two exhibitions will be sold at a charity auction conducted by Sotheby’s and hosted by the Consulate General of Sweden on November 17th.  Twenty per cent of the funds raised will go to the artists and 80 per cent to IOM’s emergency fund, which assists vulnerable migrants in urgent need.
Other events linked to the exhibition will include a seminar on art and migration hosted by the Cultural Management Department of the Istanbul Bilgi University on November 9th.
During the exhibition, special culinary events will also be organized with the participation of the Istanbul Eats restaurant, where food prepared by cooks from the Philippines, Romania, Cameroon, Ethiopia and Liberia living in Istanbul will be served at lunchtime.
Movies addressing global migration topics will also be screened in the Pera Museum, the Goethe Institut and the Dimitrie Cantemir Romanian Cultural Center. In the Pera Museum, director Reyan Tuvi will give a talk after the screening of her movie “Ofsayt” on 10th November. Seyfettin Tokmak, the director of “Kırık Midyeler / Broken Mussels” will speak after the screening of his movie at the Goethe Institut 14th November.
On November 17th, IOM will host a night of multi-cultural entertainment at Garajistanbul. This will include  the African dance group Baye Fall, the multicultural music band Light in Babylon, the traditional Brazilian martial arts band Capoeira Angola, and the acclaimed reggae group Enzo Ikah Band.
