Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, M.P
Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare & Overseas Employment

Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Faridpur-3 constituency in last National Parliamentary Election held on December 29, 2008. He is a senior member of the current cabinet and in charge of the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare & Overseas Employment.

Mr Hossain was born in 1942. He obtained his Engineering (Civil) degree from the Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka in 1963. He did his Masters in Engineering from the Strathclyeede University of UK in 1974.

Mr Hossain was the first Chief Engineer of Rural Workers’ Programme in Bangladesh. The programme was undertaken by the then Bangladesh Government to construct the rural infrastructure and generate rural employment. From 1973-80 he worked as the Project Director of this programme. He held many senior positions in the Government of Bangladesh and Development Partners. His contribution to the establishment of Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in Bangladesh is widely recognized.

Engineer Khandker Mosharraf Hossain has addressed numerous seminars and workshops in several countries of the world. He joined as a visiting Professor in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1980. He worked as the Chief Technical Consultant of ILO in Sierra-Leone (1980-89) and Uganda (1989-90).

He was a leading participant in two successful meetings with Her Royal Highness the Queen Elizabeth in relation to upholding the rights of Expatriate Bangladeshis in the UK.

He was a former President of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI), a post he held successively for two terms. He is the current Chairman of Faridpur Division and Padma Bridge Implementation Committee. He was also the President of Bangladesh Association in Glasgow-Scotland. He was the president of Dhaka Uttara Club. He is also involved with different socio-cultural and educational institutions.

He received Journalist Association Award for his outstanding contribution to the trade and industrial sector of Bangladesh. He was the President of International Labour Conference from June 2009 to June 2010. He is the current President of Colombo Process, a forum of 11 Asian labour sending countries. The 4th Ministerial Consultation of Colombo Process held in Dhaka from 19-21, April 2011 under his Chairmanship.

Under his able leadership, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare & Overseas Employment is working relentlessly to ensure better management of labour market both in home and abroad.

Engineer Hossain is blessed with two daughters, one son and eight lovely grandchildren.
