Media & Public Information (MPI)

MPI acts as IOM's Spokesperson's Group and is a resource providing advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM HQ and missions worldwide. It is also responsible for media relations.

The main written output of the department is the bi-weekly Press Briefing Notes. These are delivered verbally at the UN Palais des Nations in Geneva on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10.30 am by a member of the department.

They are simultaneously disseminated electronically to media worldwide, governments, other agencies, IOM missions etc. and posted on the IOM website (www.iom.int) in English, French and Spanish. MPI responds to enquiries generated by the notes, and provides interviews and other follow-up.

MPI also produces a biannual features magazine - Migration - and a variety of other public information materials, including press releases to mark special events, information folders and fact sheets on specific IOM activity areas.

In addition, MPI provides video news releases - VNRs - of IOM operations and migration issues around the world. These are usually scripted and directed by MPI and shot in the field by professional camera crews. They are disseminated to broadcasters free of charge and in broadcast quality through the IOM website. The site also has links to stock broadcast quality video footage on various migration related issues.

MPI also contributes to IOM's electronic Photo Archive. This picture database contains images of IOM activities over the past 50 years. These can be freely downloaded for use in publications.
