IOM Aids Southern Sudanese Returnees

IOM helps 1,400 South Sudanese returnees leave Khartoum by train on 1 March. The 10-day journey will bring the returnees to Aweil and Wau in the Republic of South Sudan and is the first train to leave Khartoum since the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan signed a memorandum of understanding in early February outlining a voluntary, safe and dignified return process.
Evacuating 1,222 African Migrants from Sabha

An IOM-supported convoy of 15 lorries carrying 1,222 African migrants from Sabha, southern Libya has recently reached Chad safely. IOM provided them with the first humanitarian assistance including medical care and organized the return to their homes in Chad and elsewhere in Africa.

IOM Chad has conducted assessment mission to southern Libya late June 2011. This has resulted into air evacuation of nearly two thousand migrants that were stranded in Gatroun and Sabha. Food distribution and Medical care were also provided during the mission. To meet the needs of the stranded migrants, IOM has set up a Transit Centre in Sabha. Due to the recent deterioration of the security situation on the ground, over 3000 migrants from different countries have sought refuge in the Transit Centre. IOM is in the process of organizing their evacuation by road through Chad.
