IOM membership is comprised of 146 Member States and 13 Observer States. IOM works closely with governments in promoting migration management that ensures humane and orderly migration that is beneficial to migrants and societies.

Partnerships exist in several key areas between IOM and governments in Africa, Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. The total number of active IOM projects in various countries across the world was over 2,300 in 2009, with more than 700 projects starting that year alone.
