International Migration Law Course Begins

IOM, the Ministry in Charge of the Moroccan
Community Residing Abroad and the Migrants’ Rights Resource
Centre are organizing a four-day course on international migration
law.

The course, which opens today at the Al
Akhawayn University in Ifrane, brings together 25 civil servants
from various ministries dealing with migration issues. It aims to
provide participants with a better understanding of a variety of
legal and political issues surrounding migration ahead of the
forthcoming Euro-African Conference on migration, which is due to
take place in July in Rabat.

IOM and Moroccan experts on migration will
focus on competences and responsibilities of States on migration,
on human trafficking and migrants’ rights, on international
humanitarian law, on migration and security, on regional and
international cooperation and on Moroccan migration law.

Recent events in Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and
Melilla, on the northern cost of Morocco have highlighted the
importance of irregular migration to and through Morocco.
Participants will discuss current migration challenges and identify
appropriate responses in line with international migration law.

Morocco takes an active role in the Western
Mediterranean Dialogue on Migration, also known as the
“5+5” Dialogue” which discusses regional
cooperative approaches in the field of migration management. IOM
intends to promote migration and development issues during the
forthcoming High Level Dialogue on International Migration and
Development, which will take place in September at UN Headquarters
in New York.
