IOM Supports Nigerian Displacement Tracking Technology

Nigeria - IOM this week donated information technology equipment to Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as part of its project: “Strengthening Humanitarian Response Capacity in North East Nigeria through Displacement Tracking, Monitoring and Information Dissemination” – also known as the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM).

The DTM project is being implemented by IOM and NEMA with funding from USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA).

The equipment, which will be used in NEMA’s HQ in Abuja and in its zonal offices in Adamawa, Borno and Gombe states, included five printers with toners, three laptops and three modems. It will contribute to NEMA’s gathering and analysis of data on internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northeast Nigeria.

Muhammad Sani Sidi, Director-General of NEMA, said: “We [NEMA] are enjoying our relationship with IOM, and are especially grateful for IOM’s expertise on tracking of displacement in the country. The DTM project has ensured that there are reliable and credible figures available on internally displaced persons in Nigeria.”

Since July 2014, IOM has been collaborating with the government of Nigeria to provide humanitarian assistance to people displaced by the escalating humanitarian crisis in the country’s northeast. This assistance has included the gathering of data on displacement, psychosocial support, emergency shelter and essential non-food relief items.
