Senegal - IOM Senegal and its partners, this week, launched a border management training course for police and customs officers in Senegal. The programme will run from 11-22 July.

During the training at the Police School in Dakar, over 50 participating officials will be introduced to the newly developed Standard Operating Procedures Manual for Police and Customs in Senegal developed by IOM Senegal and the Senegalese government. The manual includes modules on human rights, border management information systems and community policing.

“With this training, IOM and our Spanish and French partners aim to enhance cooperation between border police and customs officials operating at Senegalese border crossing points. This will facilitate the legal movement of goods and people, and combat cross-border crime, including trafficking and smuggling of people and goods,” said IOM Senegal project coordinator Massimo Ramanzin.

The training is part of a three-year integrated border management project implemented by IOM Senegal and financed by the European Union. It is designed to help the Senegalese government achieve better security and surveillance along its Mauritanian and Malian borders, while improving the facilitation of free movement of people and goods.

As part of the project, IOM Senegal is also constructing or renovating six border posts along the Mauritanian border to enhance border management and security.
