And the #MigrantHeroes Prize Goes to….

The #MigrantHeroes Smartphone Film competition, a new IOM initiative that sought submissions for the Migrant Heroes Prize at the 5th Olleh International Smartphone Film Festival (OISFF) in the Republic of Korea, successfully concluded on 17 August with 57 submissions from 23 countries from all around the world.

IOM missions in Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Haiti, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Norway, Germany, and the Republic of Korea have submitted smartphone films to the competition, while over 40 IOM missions actively supported the initiative by participating in the social media promotion.

“It’s amazing what other IOM missions did to support this initiative,” said Eunjin Jeong, communications officer at IOM Seoul who coordinated the initiative together with the Media and Communications Division (MCD) in Geneva.

“Missions in South America and Syria, for example, invested so much time and effort and submitted five films each, which contributed significantly to IOM’s long-term efforts to document migrant experiences from all around the world,” she continued.

The Migrant Heroes Prize was created as a result of collaboration between IOM and Korea Telecom (KT) Corporation, the largest communication provider in the Republic of Korea and the organizer of the OISFF, the biggest of its kind in the world.

The competition ran from 1 July to 17 August.

The finalists of the Migrant Heroes Prize will be announced on 3 September, while the overall winner will be announced on 9 September at the award ceremony in Seoul.

The winner of the Migrant Heroes Prize will receive approximately USD 2,000 and has a chance of also winning the Olleh Grand Prize which is awarded to one superior film from among all selection categories, receiving approximately USD 10,000. The winning films will be screened at a movie theatre in Seoul, South Korea throughout September and October this year.
