The International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Migration Agency, has maintained an effective office in The Commonwealth of Dominica (Dominica) since 2017. Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in September 2017 the Government of Dominica agreed to the establishment of the IOM Dominica Office to support with the initial post-crisis response.
IOM’s emergency response intervention included registration and tracking of internally displaced people using IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM). Other initiatives included enhancing the facilitites and services at emergency facilitites, and assisting with durable solutions for displaced populations through ‘Build Back Better’ Trainings, and assistance in early housing recovery.
Since then, IOM has moved from emergency response to migration management and development work. Today, the country office supports the Government and people of Dominica in several initiatives including disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction, migration, environment and climate change, migration data and research, health, integrated border management, and community and economic development.
