IOM the Netherlands assists migrants who wish to return voluntarily to their country of origin and supports their sustainable reintegration. Assistance consists of information and counselling services, procuring travel documents, arranging safe travel, and providing reintegration support. IOM is in favour of reintegration assistance, based on human dignity and as a major sustainability factor in countries of origin. Through the network of IOM offices around the world, IOM the Netherlands offers individual in-kind reintegration support, such as setting up income generating activities, or financing educational or training programmes. Tailored assistance is provided to specific vulnerable groups, including migrants with health concerns, victims of trafficking, unaccompanied minors, families or single parents with underage children, and undocumented migrants.

Maximizing the positive relationship between migration and development has long been a focus of IOM’s work. IOM the Netherlands offers temporary physical and online return assignments to diaspora members who wish to use their professional knowledge and experience for the development of their home country.
Many highly skilled migrants living and working in the Netherlands remain strongly connected to their country of origin. Their cultural ties and commitment to the country of origin, combined with their knowledge, experience and language skills make them excellent agents for development.
Through the project Connecting Diaspora for Development (CD4D) IOM the Netherlands acts as facilitator and mediator between the diaspora and the institutions in the countries of origin. The project aims to exchange knowledge, skills and attitudes of migrants for the reconstruction and development of their country of origin. CD4D is demand driven, based on priorities and development strategies of in six target countries: Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Sierra Leone and Somalia.
IOM works closely with our offices in these countries by discussing the migration and development opportunities and challenges, identifying priority sectors for development in these countries and outreach to the diaspora community in the Netherlands.

Resettlement to the Netherlands
IOM facilitates the selection and cultural orientation missions of the Dutch Government and arranges the safe travel of the refugees to the Netherlands. For many decades, IOM has played a vital role in refugee resettlement around the world, in cooperation with UNHCR. Special consideration is given to refugees with medical problems and women at risk.
Relocation to the Netherlands
In response to the high number of migrants arriving in Italy and Greece, the European Commission developed a solidarity mechanism to relocate selected individuals to other European member states. IOM the Netherlands actively supports the Dutch Government with this operation.
Family Reunification Assistance
The family members of a person holding a refugee status may apply for family reunification in the Netherlands. Travelling to the Netherlands can be challenging for the family due to medical conditions, administrative requirements or missing documents. IOM offers assistance for family reunification applicants and their families travelling to the Netherlands.
Integration, employment support, skill recognition and private sector engagement
IOM in the Netherlands supports the integration of beneficiaries of international protection in their new home communities. The project VOORwerk brings together the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), IOM and the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF. It supports beneficiaries of international protection residing in asylum reception centres in their efforts to integrate into the Dutch labour market. This is done by offering training, personal guidance, consultation hours, and volunteering opportunities. The IOM Mission in the Netherlands manages Skills2Work, which is a pan-European initiative on skills validation and recognition for beneficiaries of international protection in nine European Member States.
