IOM NGO Humanitarian Consultations

IOM NGO Humanitarian Consultations

Geneva, Switzerland
30 June 2015

The first IOM-NGO humanitarian consultation was jointly organized by International Council of Voluntary Agencies) and IOM. Held in Geneva, the event was attended by 76 participants from more than 40 NGOs and 17 countries, with the clear objectives to:

  • Engage NGO partners in the ongoing development of IOM’s institutional humanitarian policy, Principles for Humanitarian action (PHA);
  • Enhance coordination and joint activities between NGOs and IOM, including discussions related to complementarity in the field, approaches to funding, and joint advocacy messaging;
  • Reflect on humanitarian action with a focus on mobility, migration and displacement, including information management on displacement, migrants in crisis, and durable solutions.

Participants’ input fed into the development of IOM’s organizational humanitarian policy, launched in 2016, one of the key elements of which is humanitarian partnership.

The participants recommended that IOM should institutionalize IOM-NGO humanitarian consultations and hold them as an annual event.  Going forward, IOM and NGOs should pursue partnerships at a strategic level, which should extend beyond project implementation.
