IOM Trains Mauritanian Border Police, Gendarmerie on Border Management

Mauritania - IOM and GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) are this week providing training on border management, migration and human trafficking for 18 border control officers in Kaédi, Mauritania

The training is part of an IOM project: "Enhancing Border Management in Mauritania – the involvement of the Gendarmerie", funded by the European Union.

Located in southeast Mauritania on the Senegal River, Kaédi is a crucial crossing point for migrants coming from Senegal and Mali.

"We have organised the training in Kaédi because its location allows us to bring together participants from different regions, including Kaédi, Brakna, Guidimaka, and because it is an area that has traditionally seen a lot of migration," explained Djibril Djigo, who organised the workshop for IOM Nouakchott.

This training is part of a series of trainings that will facilitate cooperation between IOM and the Mauritanian authorities. The programme will provide national security forces responsible for border management with the knowledge and resources needed to effectively manage international migration flows.

Mauritania’s security forces are an important element of border management. They need to perform their tasks professionally and in line with international standards.  The training provided by IOM will help them to maintain national security, while ensuring the safety of migrants and travellers.
