New Resolution Calls for Zero Tolerance on Human Trafficking

Female ministers representing the Central American Council of
Ministries for Women (COMMCA by its Spanish acronym) issued a
resolution calling on all sectors of society to adopt a zero
tolerance attitude vis a vis human trafficking, especially
trafficking of women.

During a the XII Meeting of COMMCA, held in Panama last week,
the ministers also joined forces to develop specific short-term
actions to prevent and eradicate human trafficking

People affected by this crime are very often unemployed women,
who are physically and/or psychologically abused, and who may be
victims of social and family discrimination.

Findings published by the Inter-American Women’s
Commission confirm the existence of criminal networks in the
region.  They transport Central American women within and
outside the region, but they also bring women to Central America
from other parts  of the world, such as Colombia, Thailand and
Eastern Europe,  for labour or sexual exploitation.

IOM is providing support to COMMCA as part of its ongoing
efforts to promote increased coordination amongst all actors
fighting human trafficking.
