Strengthening Capacity of Pakistan's Legal Community to Combat Human Trafficking

In close cooperation with the Federal Judicial Academy (FJA), IOM
is today holding a second training of the judiciary in Islamabad as
part of a series of capacity-building initiatives aimed at
sensitizing judges, magistrates, lawyers and larger civil society
to the human rights dimension of human trafficking and to increase
their capacity to counter the crime and to protect victims.

"We hope this comprehensive training and capacity-building
programme will contribute to best practices and methodologies to
combat the serious challenges posed by human trafficking in
Pakistan," says Hassan Abdel Moneim Mostafa, IOM Regional
Representative for West and Central Asia.

With the support of experts from the Federal Investigation
Agency (FIA), lawyers, and FJA, IOM will focus on issues such as
how to differentiate between human trafficking and smuggling,
existing laws which can be used to prosecute traffickers and
protect victims and the applicability of international practices
and standards to Pakistan's legal system.

In the first training organized in Islamabad in February 2008,
participants were 40 civil judges/judicial magistrates from the
North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Today's training involves 36 civil judges/judicial magistrates
from Baluchistan and NWFP and 14 lawyers from Islamabad Bar
Association.
