Not Lost and Not Forgotten: Syrian Children are Fighting for their Future with Education

Syria: Six years into the armed conflict in the Syrian Arab Republic, the situation continues to deteriorate, write Muse Mohammed, Laura Sisniega Crespo, Raber Aziz, and Olivia Headon.

Over 5 million Syrians have taken refuge in the five neighbouring countries – Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Egypt; nearly half of them are children.

An entire generation of Syrian children and youth are living through conflict and displacement. For many of them, this is the only life that they have experienced. They are on the verge of becoming a lost generation.

Syrian Sweets: Iraq's Female-Run Sweet Factory

Iraq: Nearly 240,000 Syrian refugees live in Iraq, having fled the crisis in Syria. Although Iraq is experiencing mass displacement created by its own deadly conflict, life there is becoming more and more permanent for displaced Syrians, as they see sieges and death enduring in their country, write Sazan Gawdan and Olivia Headon.

In 2016, five years into the conflict, a group of female Syrian refugees came together and set up the Jeenda Sweet Factory in Domiz Camp, Iraq.

Most of the women involved are the heads of their households and can now provide for their young families for the first time since fleeing Syria.

Migration in the News


  • IANS/AKI reported that a total 27,850 migrants and refugees landed in Europe in the first 89 days of this year, of whom 23,125 reached Italy.
     
  • Reuters reported that a four-day-old baby was one of over 480 migrants rescued on Saturday during search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean Sea. 
     
  • NRT reported that more than 200 migrants were rescued by a Spanish aid agency after being found drifting off the coast of Libya on Saturday.
     
  • AFP reported that Greece will toughen rules on voluntary repatriation to combat alleged abuses by economic migrants seeking refugee status.
     
  • Greek Reporter and Ekathimerini reported that as more migrants arrive in Greece with warmer weather, authorities plan to crack down on rejected asylum seekers. 
     
  • Asharq Al-Awsat reported that up to 10,000 migrants stranded in Libya will be flown back to their home countries this year, but the returns can only play a limited role in tackling migrant flows toward Europe.
     
  • Rudaw reported on the TEDxNishtiman conference on Rehabilitation and Development held in Erbil, Iraq on Saturday, which was organized with the participation of internally displaced persons and refugees. 
     
  • Reuters reported two more planes carrying Afghans deported from Europe landed in Kabul this week, failed asylum seekers sent back under an agreement between the European Union and Afghan government.
