PLURAL + Call for Entries 2017

PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival invites the world’s youth to submit dynamic and forward-thinking videos focusing on themes of migration, diversity and social inclusion.  The event is organized by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the UN Migration Agency (IOM) in collaboration with many partners.  The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in New York later this year.  Deadline for submission is 4 June 2017.

Born into Drought: Somalia 2017
Somalia: In November 2016, rains failed for the third year in a row, forcing Somalia into a devastating drought. From then until March 2017, over 600,000 people have been displaced within the country.

This number is rising. Forced to abandon their homes and livelihoods in search of food and water, more than 8,000 people are newly displaced each day.

  • UN Radio spoke with IOM’s Muse Mohamed who described what he saw during his month-long assignment in drought-affected Somalia and the efforts underway to assist people there.
     
  • AFP reported that the UN has assessed the border management capacity at Afghanistan’s two main border crossings with Pakistan after an unprecedented 600,000 Afghans returned from the neighbouring country last year.
     
  • EU Observer reported that the Greek government is giving cash incentives for asylum seekers on the islands to forgo their legal rights to appeal their cases.
     
  • Channels TV/ Reuters reported on the human rights abuses suffered by African migrants in Libya’s Sabha city.
     
  • Libyan Express reported on comments by Germany’s foreign minister Sigmar Gabriel that a deal between Italy and Libya to hold migrants in camps in the north African country ignores “catastrophic conditions” in Libya and would not curb migration.
     
  • AFP reported from Banki, a Nigerian border town that used to be a bustling trading area but is now one of the last vestiges of Boko Haram's dominance in the region.
     
  • The Daily Star reported on the misery of many slum dwellers in Bangladesh who migrate to cities seeking to escape extreme poverty due to social and economic shocks or environmental consequences.
     
  • Jordan Times reported that the government of Japan is funding a project which provides humanitarian support to refugees and strengthens the border management capacity of Jordan.
     
  • Ethical Journalism Network spoke with IOM’s Paul Dillon, who noted that ethical media coverage of migration and refugees was essential. He was speaking after the World Press Freedom Day 2017 debate in Jakarta, Indonesia.
