Smugglers Preying on Ethiopian Migrant Children is Too Common
By Hajer Naili in Washington, DC
(IOM) Yemen - For a considerable amount of time, Yemen, the poorest country in the Middle East, has been a transit and host country for thousands of migrants, many of whom are unaccompanied boys from the Horn of Africa, hoping to find work in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. Although Yemen has struggled for years to address child protection issues, the conflict that began in late March 2015 has set back any progress achieved. Children – including migrant children -- have been greatly impacted by the conflict, suffering injuries and deaths. Additionally, children are being recruited for military activities and by criminal networks to smuggle goods over borders or are being forced into labor, domestic servitude, and sexual exploitation.
Low-cost, Locally Available Shelters In Pakistan
By Ammarah Mubarak and Saad Hafeez in Pakistan
(IOM) Pakistan - Flooding in 2010 affected 18 million people in Pakistan. With declining donor funds and flooding again in 2011 and 2012, the humanitarian community required low-cost solutions that could be scaled up to meet both the immediate and the transitional needs of large populations in differing geographical areas.
The approach of the One Room Shelter Programme that IOM (the UN Migration Agency) Pakistan implemented to meet the recovery needs of affected populations in 2010 marked a move away from the usual emergency response.
