Temporary Suspension of UN Migration Agency Emergency Activities in Qayara, Mosul

Iraq - IOM, the UN Migration Agency, has temporarily suspended certain emergency activities in both Qayara’s air strip emergency site and the Haj Ali camp, due to security concerns.

Yesterday’s (06/07) decision to halt certain activities and distributions in the sites, situated outside Mosul, comes following a temporary decline in the security environment in Qayara District, due to sporadic violence, including exchanges of gunfire. “The situation in Qayara is not currently conducive to humanitarian operations,” said Vincent Houver, Deputy Director of IOM’s Operations and Emergencies.

UN Migration Agency Releases Recommendations to EU Council President Estonia

Estonia - Human rights, social cohesion and international cooperation are the focus of recommendations that IOM, the UN Migration Agency, made to the Estonian Government. Estonia has now taken the helm of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) from July to December 2017.

Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 101,266 in 2017; 2,297 Deaths

Switzerland - The UN Migration Agency (IOM) reports that 101,266 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea in 2017 through 5 July, with almost 85 per cent arriving in Italy and the remainder divided between Greece, Cyprus and Spain. This compares with 234,646 arrivals across the region through 3 July 2016.

  • EFE reported on comments by IOM Director General William Lacy Swing who said the arrival of immigrants to Europe was not an "emergency" but rather a "crisis of solidarity".
     
  • AFP reported that EU interior ministers on Thursday pledged to back an urgent European Commission plan to help Italy, which has been overwhelmed by migrants arriving by sea from North Africa. In Rome, top diplomats from the EU and Africa met officials from the UN over the ongoing crisis.
     
  • Angle News reported that G20 leaders are discussing Europe’s ongoing migration crisis at their meeting in Hamburg over the next two days, following urgent migration discussions by EU interior ministers on Thursday in the Estonian capital Tallinn.
     
  • Thomson Reuters Foundation reported on remarks by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Director-General José Graziano da Silva who said climate change poses a major risk for rural people in developing countries, often leading to distress-driven migration, and bolstering sustainable agriculture is an essential part of an effective policy response.
     
  • Food and Beverage News reported that FAO honored 10 individuals and organizations for their work on pressing issues of food security and sustainable development.
     
  • The Washington Post reported that despite the known risks of sexual violence on the journey to Europe, women are still willing to risk their lives to escape equally dire sexual violence at home.
     
  • The Cambodia Daily reported that the Thai government has agreed to set up stations across Thailand where Cambodian irregular migrant workers can register for documents that will allow them to stay and work in the country.
     
  • AFP/NTN24 reported that IOM has called on Colombian authorities to tackle xenophobia against Venezuelans who come to their territory because of the crisis in their country.
