Time for Action: New Initiative Strengthens Fight Against Migrant Smuggling

Yesterday in Vienna, IOM, the United Nations Migration Agency and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) launched a joint platform on countering migrant smuggling. The initiative encourages the main stakeholders to join forces on, among other things, research, reinforcing Member States’ capacities - upon request - to dismantle criminal networks engaging in migrant smuggling, enhancing assistance to smuggled migrants, and supporting the development of prevention strategies and action plans.

A Sense of Urgency

This initiative is the result of a growing concern about the tremendous loss of life among migrants leaving their countries to reach a new country of destination.

In 2017 alone IOM has recorded 6142 fatalities worldwide among migrants, including refugees and asylum-seekers, who have died or gone missing in the process of migration.

Two decades after the war that tore their country apart, citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina are still hoping to join the European Union. It’s a dream that some don’t wait for, as several thousands flee to the West in hope of a better life. While others, less conformist, choose to stay in order to rebuild what has been lost.
