Nigeria - IOM has built mental health resource centres in nine locations across northeastern Nigeria to assist and support thousands of people who have fled the Boko Haram insurgency, and the local communities who are hosting them.

Cuba - This week, IOM (10/1) delivered a consignment of non-food aid to communities most affected by Hurricane Matthew in Cuba’s Guantanamo province.

Democratic Republic of the Congo - Through its rapid response mechanism, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) is providing an initial SEK 1.6 million (USD 175,000) to IOM’s assistance programme for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)’s eastern province of North Kivu.

Iraq - Nearly 13 weeks into the Mosul military operation against the Islamic State (ISIL) – which began on 17 October – over 144,500 Iraqis are currently displaced. 

Libya - On 12 January, IOM officials met with the leadership of the Libyan Coast Guard to discuss the outcomes of a needs assessment conducted last year.

Iraq - Since the offensive to retake Mosul from militants began on 17 October 2016, IOM has tracked 22,217 families displaced from the fighting.

The ferocity of crises worldwide is forcing a record number of people to flee their homes, seeking some form of safety within their own country or across international borders.

Iraq - In emergency centers, tents are filling with people who speak of leaving Mosul at night under the cover of darkness.

Ukraine - IOM has signed donor agreements in Ukraine for up to USD 40 million in the spheres of migration and border management, crisis response and IDP support with the EU, United Kingdom, and United States.

The EU-funded EUR 27.2 million IMMIS project foresees the establishment of an integrated migration management information system for the State Migration and State Border Guard Services of Ukraine.

Another US-funded project worth USD 1.4 million aims to reform the recruitment system and curb corruption within the State Border Guard Service.

South Sudan - IOM teams are now providing lifesaving humanitarian assistance, including emergency medical support, to displaced and conflict-affected families in insecure and hard-to-reach areas of South Sudan.
