World Malaria Day

April 25th marks World Malaria Day. IOM, the UN Migration Agency, and partners are working together to promote prevention, control and elimination efforts. This year’s ‘Ready to Beat Malaria” theme highlights the reality that gains made in malaria elimination efforts must be sustained, through partnership and action. This video highlights why migrants and mobile populations are at risk, and how IOM is tackling this issue in South Sudan, Yemen and other countries.

Colombo – IOM, the UN Migration Agency and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine today signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a health assessment program for foreign nationals applying for Sri Lankan residence visas. The program will be set up by IOM on a ‘build-operate-transfer’ basis, which will allow the ministry to take it over once it is up and running.

Cox’s Bazar - As heavy rains again lashed Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar this week, UN Migration Agency medical staff helped others to gear up for monsoon and cyclone emergencies with the launch of a first aid training program designed to reach hundreds of safety volunteers.

Dushanbe – Many thousands of Tajiks leave their country every year for jobs in Russia and Kazakhstan, but the Central Asian nation is also a transit zone for refugees and migrants from China, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Like nationals, transiting migrants also have access to medical checks, and the health status of migrant workers is a priority for the Tajik National Health Strategy.

Geneva – On World Malaria Day, IOM and other global partners are promoting efforts to tackle malaria, one of the oldest, yet most pervasive public health threats of our time.
