99th IOM Council Welcomes New Members, Launches World Migration Report and Discusses Migration and Social Change
IOM's 99th IOM's Council opens on 29th November in Conference Room
XVII at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
The four-day session of IOM's governing body will open with the
Kingdom of Lesotho, the Central African Republic, the Democratic
Republic of Timor-Leste, the Republic of Botswana and the Kingdom
of Swaziland joining as new member States, bringing IOM's
membership to 132. The International Institute of Humanitarian Law
(IIHL) and the Federation of Christian Organizations for
International Volunteer Service (FOCSIV-Volontari nel Mondo) and
the Scalabrini International Migration Network (SIMN) will join as
observers.
This will be followed by a keynote address by the European
Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström ahead of the
launch of IOM's 2010 World Migration Report, "The Future of
Migration: Building Capacities for Change".

This year's flagship publication argues that in a world where
demographics, economic needs and the effects of environmental
change are driving the inexorable rise in numbers of international
migrants, governments and non-state actors have little choice but
to invest adequate financial and human resources to ensure States,
societies and migrants reap the full potential of future
migration.
An interactive dialogue with the members of the Global Migration
Group (GMG) will take place on 1st December. The outgoing chair of
the GMG, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights
Navanethem Pillay and other members of the Group will discuss the
Group's priority areas of work.
This year's International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) will open
on 2 December. It will examine how migration can positively drive
social change and development at all levels.
Keynote speakers will include Sandrine Salerno, Mayor of the
City of Geneva, Seyed Taghi Ghaemi, Advisor to the Minister of
Interior, Islamic Republic of Iran, Sakir Fakili, Director of
Consular Affairs. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkey and Alfredo
Camelo from the Cross-Cultural Studies Centre for Migrants,
Geneva.
