IOM Council Re-Elects Director General, Admits Malawi, Suriname
Switzerland - IOM’s governing body has re-elected Director General William Lacy Swing to a second five-year term and admitted two new member states – Malawi and Suriname.
Ambassador Swing’s re-election to the post that he has held since October 2008 was unopposed at the 102nd (Special) Session of the IOM Council in Geneva and he was elected by acclamation.
Ambassador Swing, who was nominated by the United States, thanked IOM member states for their confidence in re-electing him for a second term and pledged to work tirelessly in the interests of the membership and migrants.
Representatives of over 40 member states spoke from the floor to congratulate Swing on his re-election and to welcome Malawi and Suriname as new IOM member states. The accession of the two countries brings IOM membership to 151 countries.
