Climate change and natural resource exploitation have caused severe environmental damage in some parts of the Guinean territory. The consequential loss of fertile and arable lands has impoverished local populations relying on agriculture as their only means of subsistence. This factor, combined with the socio-economic hardships experienced throughout the country, have led to increasing internal movements from rural-rural or rural-urban areas in search of livelihood opportunities. As a result, competition for already scarce resources in urban areas has further exposed vulnerable communities to poor living conditions.

Through the project “Building the Resilience of Communities Affected by Climate Change and Environmental Degradation in Guinea” IOM Guinea, with financing from the IOM Development Fund, supports the Government of Guinea in its effort to improve access to sustainable livelihood solutions among the communities most affected by climate change.
