IOM, in partnership with the European Commission through its
Humanitarian Aid Department (ECHO), is to provide emergency
assistance to some 4,000 typhoon-affected families in the National
Capital Region (NCR) of the Philippines.

The NCR, which includes the capital Manila, was the region worst
affected by Typhoon Ketsana, which hit the Philippines on 26th
September.

The three-month EUR 360,000 project, which follows a government
appeal for international help, aims to provide immediate emergency
relief and assistance to at least 3,000 families in evacuation
centres, and 1,000 families in return communities in five of the
hardest hit areas.

 

"IOM's ECHO-funded support will help over 20,000 people who have
lost their homes and possessions in the typhoon. It will include
the distribution of emergency non-food items and shelter repair
materials to help them rebuild their homes," says IOM Regional
Representative for East Asia Charles Harns.

IOM is appealing for additional funds to help more affected
families in the NCR and Region IV-A (Calabarzon), which comprises
Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and Rizal provinces.

Yesterday USAID's Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance
(OFDA) announced a further contribution of USD 150,000 to support
IOM's efforts to help Ketsana survivors.
