IOM IN YOUR COUNTRY

Overview

IOM Timor-Leste also supports the Government in attaining its longer-term development goals outlined in Timor-Leste’s Strategic Development, and in accordance with the 2030 Agenda [WJ1] and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through the provision of technical assistance and advice to further strengthen institutional capacity.

Since 1999, the Mission has been working closely with the Government to develop coherent and well-coordinated migration governance and border management systems to ensure efficient migration management for Timorese citizens, visitors, immigrants, irregular migrants, and asylum seekers. The Mission has also been providing support and technical assistance to the Government and civil society in dealing with new emerging trends such as human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

IOM Timor-Leste has implemented several multi-year projects aimed at strengthening institutional capacities at various levels in terms of disaster prevention, preparedness, response and recovery, as well as enhancing grassroots level resilience within the most disaster-prone communities to reduce the risk of future displacement in the country.

Finally, recognizing the evident link between migration/mobility and the spread of contagious diseases, IOM’s Migration Health team continues to support the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) with tuberculosis (TB) prevention and screening among mobile and other vulnerable populations in Timor-Leste.
